Megaways mechanics guide

What is Megaways? Dynamic reels and variable ways explained.

Megaways is Big Time Gaming's dynamic reel modifier: reel heights can change on each spin, so the active ways count changes too. It does not set RTP, volatility, or bonus rules.

Multiply the active symbol positions on each reel only when that game's rules define wins that way.
Treat 117,649 or 200,704 as a title-specific maximum, not the count on every spin.
Separate the dynamic reels from cascades, wilds, free spins, and multipliers.

How to compare this group

Multiply the active symbol positions on each reel only when that game's rules define wins that way.
Treat 117,649 or 200,704 as a title-specific maximum, not the count on every spin.
Separate the dynamic reels from cascades, wilds, free spins, and multipliers.
Compare RTP, volatility, maximum win, and the exact game version as separate facts.

How active Megaways are counted

Megaways changes how many symbol positions are active on each reel. In a standard adjacent-reel ways calculation, multiply the active heights together: seven positions on each of six reels gives 7 × 7 × 7 × 7 × 7 × 7, or 117,649 ways. Bonanza, Extra Chilli, and Twin Spin Megaways use that familiar maximum.

The maximum still belongs to the individual title. Great Rhino Megaways, Buffalo King Megaways, and Madame Destiny Megaways publish 200,704 ways for their layouts, while other reviewed games publish 117,649. The Megaways label alone therefore does not supply one universal reel formula or maximum.

Maximum ways are not active ways

The live ways count changes with the reel heights produced for that spin. A simple six-reel layout showing 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7 active positions would produce 5,040 ways under an adjacent-reel multiplication rule, even if the game advertises a much larger maximum.

A larger maximum ways figure does not prove a higher RTP, lower volatility, greater hit frequency, or larger maximum win. Those values describe different parts of the game and must be checked separately for the exact version in front of you.

Megaways, paylines, and clusters form wins differently

A ways game usually checks matching symbols across adjacent reels without requiring one named path. A payline game follows defined routes, while Cluster Pays uses connected groups. The visible grid can look similar, but the rule that forms a win is different.

Megaways describes the reel modifier, not every detail of the payout system. Read the individual game's rules before assuming which reels must match, whether both directions count, or how extra reel positions affect the active total.

Cascades and reactions are separate mechanics

Bonanza and Extra Chilli combine Megaways with reactions, while Great Rhino Megaways, Buffalo King Megaways, and 5 Lions Megaways describe tumbling or cascading wins. Those features remove winning symbols and refill the open positions, but they are not what makes the reels Megaways.

Revenge of Loki Megaways places its Tumble feature inside free spins. That contrast matters: a Megaways title may use cascades throughout, only in one feature, or not at all. Open the review instead of inferring the sequence from the reel label.

Compare feature routes, not only the ways number

The reviewed set separates games with similar reel labels. Great Rhino Megaways lets the free-spins trigger choose between more spins and a smaller starting multiplier or fewer spins and a larger one. Madame Destiny Megaways uses a wheel for its starting spins and multiplier, while Buffalo King Megaways builds tumbles around multiplier wilds.

5 Lions Megaways offers seven free-game choices, Extra Chilli uses a free-spins gamble, and Revenge of Loki Megaways adds Super Symbol transformations and extra-spin routes. These differences tell you more about the feature flow than a 117,649 or 200,704 badge.

Where the Megaways comparison stops

Generic dynamic-reel and variable-ways questions belong here. The comparison table uses reviewed data for eight titles, but each review remains the source for its RTP configuration, volatility label, maximum win, stake range, feature rules, and mobile layout.

Separate guides cover paylines, clusters, cascades, RTP, volatility, maximum win, wilds, scatters, and free spins. Keeping those boundaries clear prevents one reel mechanic from being used as a shortcut for the rest of a game's mathematics or features.

FAQ

What does Megaways mean?

It is Big Time Gaming's dynamic reel mechanic. Changing reel heights create a variable number of ways to win from spin to spin.

Do Megaways slots always have 117,649 ways?

No. It is a common six-reel maximum, but the active count changes with each layout and some reviewed games publish a 200,704-way maximum instead.

Does a higher Megaways count mean better odds?

No. The ways maximum does not determine RTP, volatility, hit frequency, or maximum win. Check those facts separately for the exact game version.
